Twitter Rules Businesses Must Know

Twitter Rules Businesses Must Know

1. Provide your name, avatar and a short bio

Always include your name and a short bio in your Twitter profile. People want to know who you are. Make sure to use your photo or a custom avatar so others can remember and recognize you.

2. Be social

Be social and interact. Answer the questions people ask and be proactive and participate in discussions. Retweet if you find something interesting and be kind and say thanks to people who follow you. Add something to the conversation. Don’t tweet just for the thrill of posting something.

3. Don’t over tweet

While there are people who are interested in reading dozens of your tweets one after the other, most are not. Flooding is not polite so try not to overdo it. If your followers have too much to read and explore, they might easily choose to ignore your tweets.

4. Follow, unfollow and block whoever you wish

On Twitter, you are free to follow and unfollow whoever you wish. You’re also free to block people from viewing your tweets. When someone follows you, you are not obligated to follow them back.

5. Retweet in 140 characters

Use tinyURL or is.gd when you post a link. Add value to your tweets and make them easy to understand and scan.

6. Host different contests & events for your followers

Host different contests, surveys and events for your followers to keep them interested and engaged in your tweets. You may want to host a giveaway event on Twitter for your followers only. Freebies are always a guarantee of getting new followers and this will build your credibility in your niche.

Ecommerce Web 2.0 Tools Everybody Should Know

Ecommerce Web 2.0 Tools Everybody Should Know

So you have built the online shop, found the supplier to get the goods from and set up a cart and accounting system…

Now if someone would just come to your site and buy something.

It is one of the sad ironies of life that one of the reasons people often give for leaving a 9-5 job to set up their own website at home is they are tired of the traffic.

And that is exactly what they are looking for now.

Traditionally there were several ways to get this done:

* Use the services of greedy… err business-savvy eBay or other puny… er growing online auction services.
* Pay for ads through Google Adwords
* Buy banner advertising
* Write articles and comment on forums.
Thankfully, several new web 2.0 addresses have proved to be a hit with not only netizens but also search engines.

Web 2.0 platforms are a boon to smaller ecommerce operators. They don’t only allow you to bring more people to your site they also let you communicate with your paying and potential customers and build your service into one that is more targeted towards the people that buy your products.

There are several different types of web 2.0 platform that you, as an ecommerce operator, should be aware of:

* Video platforms
* Material hosting sites and blogs
* Social bookmarking sites
Video sites
Rich media, like video didn’t even register on peoples’ radars five years ago but that has changed with the rise of YouTube.

Now the general consensus by marketers is that you risk ignoring video at your peril.

While YouTube is the undoubted king of video sites there is are many others on the internet with different benefits and different audiences, and it is often beneficial to release your video onto a number of different sites, much like wholesale electronics supplier Chinavasion has done. These are only two of the video sites online and a Google search will bring up many more results.

Good examples of this are the Chinavasion Metacafe page and Chinavasion Revver page.

Don’t forget, when making videos, short is sweet and including descriptions and tags is always essential.

Content Sites
There are a number of content hosting sites online including Squidoo, Hubpages and some of the document hosting sites on the internet as well as blogging platforms like wordpress and moveable type.

Blogs can be excellent content hosting solutions that constantly draw attention back to your site and your products. Some, like wordpress are useful in that you can either set one up that is hosted on their server (like http://goodecommercetips.wordpress.com) or download their software and plug it directly into your site. The Chinavasion blog is one such blog. There are plusses and minuses with both scenarios and it is a decision to weigh up carefully.

Social Bookmarking Sites
Once you’ve created content you’re going to need to get somebody to see it.

A good way to draw attention to your site, and to the resources you create for people is through social bookmarking sites.

These sites are basically ways for netizens to share sites that they think are interesting with other people and are loved by both netizens and search engines.

One popular example of this is Stumbleupon. A Stumbleupon blog can create a lot of attention on its own right as seen by the Chinavasion Stumbleupon blog.

Social networking sites, like MySpace and Facebook are a different type of social bookmarking. While you can in fact use these to share your links with people they are also used to communicate with your customers, keep them informed of what is happening at your company and see what else is happening.

The new Friendfeed service is a great example of this, as seen by the Chinavasion Friendfeed room, with people sharing different links and discussing what they have found.

When putting items through social bookmarking sites it may pay to consider masking your actions a little by also submitting other links, particularly when using sites like Stumbleupon or Digg.

So what pitfalls do you have to take consideration when marketing through web 2.0?

There are two main concerns. The first is that you remain aware of your reputation online and the second is you take into consideration the time getting involved takes.

You develop a good reputation by providing great content. If something appears to be poorly written or lacking in useful information you risk getting a bad reputation.

Another way to ‘loose face’ is to fail to develop a relationship with customers On sites like YouTube, or in the case of Chinavasion Metacafe, check up on videos from time to time and answer any questions that clients and potential clients have. It doesn’t mean you’ve got to deal with every flamer or troll, in fact it is probably more beneficial to ignore the people who seem to be just posting a comment to get someone arguing with them.

Essentially if you cut corners or try to trick a customer it’s going to hit you hard in the long run. Treat people fairly and they will remain loyal to you.

Those are just some of the excellent web 2.0 posting tools out there on the internet that make great marketing tools for up and coming e-commerce operators strapped for cash.

Web Hosting Need to Know Guide

Web Hosting Need to Know Guide

Overview

My overall ranking will be a 1 to 5 scale, 1 being the total worst and 5 being top dog. The ranking takes into account features, performance, uptime, price and customer service or support. The results are based on first-hand experience acquired developing and deploying web solutions for myself and several clients over the past decade and then some. Anyone can avoid costly mistakes by learning from my experience and the experience of my clients. I have certainly been on the Internet awhile and having worked and managed several HelpDesks as well as being a certified professional webmaster, can tell you what is what in an unbiased manner.

Each of the top web hosting companies you’ll see me cover and have banners for are definitely among the best out there. I’ll do my utmost to update this blog often, not only with reviews, but with free tips and expert advice from colleagues and associates in the filed.

My initial advice would be to find the parameters of your application or website and then select the features of the hosting company that fits or slightly exceeds your needs. There are certainly several available and competition is high, which is fantastic for the consumer!

Price/Month

The price you pay per month for your web hosting service. This price generally requires that you pay for your service in one or two year increments. The price per month decreases as you select longer billing cycles. Generally there is no setup fee if you choose to pay for at least one year at a time.

Uptime Guarantee

Uptime is the promise by the hosting company that their services will serve up your pages to the Internet visitor every time. Generally, if the uptime guarantee is 99.9% then you can expect your website to be down an average of 1 minute and 26.4 seconds per day. While an uptime of 100% is what we all would like in a perfect world, it is simply not attainable in the reality.

Website uptime should be very high on your list of priorities. I know this doesn’t come to mind, first, but believe me when you have 30 or 40 sites on a dedicated server and it goes down, you WILL panic! And, if the customer service is weak, you will pay for it – emotionally and financially.

Disk Storage

Disk storage is the amount of hard drive storage for your website. Yes, this is very similar to your home or business PC, but usually setup in a failsafe method called RAID – a redundant disk array (bunch of hard drives with a failsafe method if one dies, it will continue to function.) This includes your website files and even more importantly all your databases where perhaps inventory is stored.

Today, most web hosting providers either give you unlimited disk space or an extremely high limit. You can estimate the space you will require for your site by checking the total size of all the files included in your site. Although, the size of your databases will be more difficult to calculate, because of their nature – they are built to grow. I recommend choosing a plan with unlimited disk space and this, theoretically, will never be an issue.

Why do I mention “theoretically”? Stay tuned for more on that in another article I will provide or visit my site regularly – again, this is real-world experience!

Bandwidth

Bandwidth? No, it’s not the size of the high school marching band from left to right. In layman’s terms, I always use the industry term “pipe”. Because, I think it helps folks understand it when I use the analogy of a water pipe. That is essentially what bandwidth usage is all about. The bigger your bandwidth pipe, the more Internet visitors can get to your site and the faster your pages are served up to them – and the more money you can make!

Bandwidth is generally given in a monthly “allowance.” Each of your pages may average about 300KB. A few pages visited by one Internet user or consumer would then triple or quadruple this number to say about 1200KB or 1.2 MB. If you had a few thousand visitors in a single month, this number would hit about 1.5 GB. Bottom line, if your site becomes very popular then you could end up using a lot of bandwidth capacity per month.

Therefore, if you are thinking long-term, this can be a serious consideration. This determination might also be looked at by your target audience. A website for your church, for example, won’t need much bandwidth. But, let’s take a online store, for example. You could possible get visits from all over the world, provided your advertising budget allows it or you know some great inexpensive marketing techniques – that I may just reveal in an upcoming article!

Live Phone Support

All over the world, we have been sucked into the technology age and love to sent text messages and electronic mail. We are literally trained to do it! I hardly ever pickup the phone and ask someone to do something.

BUT…, if I’m stuck due to a server limitation and I’m in the “zone”, I want a body on the other end of that phone line ASAP. And, if the server is having issued as notified to me by a client or customer, the same holds true. You’ll want LIVE phone support!

Coupons and Specials

I thought I would throw this one in there. Competition is fierce when it comes to . Why, you may ask? It may seem clear to some, but not so for newbies. Let me give it to you from an experience perspective, once again.

When you hookup with a good hosting provider, you tend to stick with them for years. Web hosting companies realize this. The last thing anyone wants to do is move a website – all the files, databases, images, etc. – from one host to another. Not only is there a concern for downtime (money potentially lost,) but, there is a high probability of something else going extremely wrong during the transition – thereby, MORE downtime.

Okay, I digress….back to coupons and specials. Because of the genral loyalty to a good hosting provider, many hosting companies will give up 10-20% on the initial sale. So, get on your favorite search engine and look for a valid un-expired coupon. Heck, if you find one and are not sure about expiration, try it anyway. They’ll let you know if it isn’t current.

5 Things You Need to Know About Behavior-Based Internet Advertising

5 Things You Need to Know About Behavior-Based Internet Advertising

Did you ever stop to wonder why those internet ads you come across while surfing almost always have something to do with a product or service you’ve recently been researching? Well, there’s a good reason. Internet marketers are focused on getting their products in front of qualified potential buyers. Notice the word “qualified” in that last sentence.

They’re not randomly advertising to just anyone. They’re advertising based on what they know interests particular consumers. And how do they know what particular consumers are interested in? That’s where behavior-based advertising comes into play. Internet marketers and SEO experts are tracking your activity. They know what you type into a search engine and they know what sites you frequent. Here are five more things you need to know about behavior-based internet advertising (BBIA).

1. Cookies Are the Internet Marketers Best Friend

Computer cookies are small files that are saved onto your computer when you visit websites, so there’s a constant record of sites you’ve visited located in your machine. Let’s say you visit a particular website onto which an internet marketer has placed a blank spot. As soon as you log on to the website, the advertiser searches your computer for your recent searches. Then the advertiser fills that blank spot with information tied to your online behavior.

2. Government Regulations May Eventually Make BBIA an Opt-In Enterprise

At present there doesn’t seem to be any push for government regulations on behavior-based internet advertising, but it never hurts to be prepared. “Opt-in” advertising means that a user would have to sign up with an advertiser in order to receive targeted advertisements. “Opt-out” advertising means that users would receive targeted ads unless they specifically requested not to receive them.

If the government were ever to make BBIA and opt-in enterprise, internet marketers would have to fill the advertising void that would most likely result from such regulations. To prepare for this possibility internet marketers might consider consulting with an SEO expert or internet marketing firm.

3. You Can Prevent Being Tracked

It’s simple. Go to Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, then Internet Options. Click on the Privacy tab. Slide the bar to Block All Cookies. But be aware that some webpages will not load properly if you’ve disabled Cookies on your machine.

4. Do Not Track

Remember how everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief when the government enacted the “Do Not Call” list that enabled a country to finally eat dinner without being interrupted by telemarketers? Well, some advocacy groups are pushing the same kind of regulations for internet marketing.

5. NebuAd

NebuAd is a Silicon Valley internet startup that claims to have new technology that doesn’t require Cookies. A typical scenario looks like this: A company that wants to provide targeted ads based on consumer behavior teams up with an internet service provider.

NebuAd installs equipment at the internet service provider’s facility that allows the company to track the searches and habits of all of internet service provider’s customers, but with no Cookies. It’s hard to say at this point whether any internet service providers will be willing to participate in such technology. That will depend on user response to such a proposal.

Behavior-based internet advertising is, without a doubt, changing the way SEO experts and internet marketers get their products in front of potential customers. The future of BBIA will largely depend on how the everyday user responds to it. If there is a great outcry against BBIA, then the future may bring governmental regulations and other changes to the ways BBIA functions.

But if users remain oblivious or indifferent, internet marketers may be able to continue using BBIA to target customers. Internet marketers should be prepared for both scenarios, either by creating their own strategies or by consulting with SEO experts.

How Much Do You Know About Web Site Conversion?

How Much Do You Know About Web Site Conversion?

Do you even know if your web site converts? Well, believe it or not web site conversion is about taking analytics and the statistic or information from your files and programs, then using them to help your visitors find what they are looking for on your web site. It guides them to do certain things while they are on your site. Like a navigational system.

Things like buying your products or reading information you might have listed on your web site for instance. Or to get them to sign up for email newsletters the opportunities are endless obviously.

Internet web site conversion simply put, allows you to show your visitors all about your web site, what its about, products and information, then in turn asks them to give you information to send them special offers or newsletters via email or regular mail. In a big way, you find out exactly what it is your customers are looking for and what it is they would like to see on your web site. Products, information, sales, whatever the case might be.

By getting your site to convert and give reasonable style with measurable return on your investing in your website it’s the best way you could possibly operate your business online.

By using website conversion nine out of ten web site clients see at least double digit growth using the conversion platform. This is definitely a good standard for the web site if it is just starting out and beginning to grow.

Web site conversion isn’t difficult though you might not understand it, some people will use different companies on the Internet to help them with the web site conversion for a fee, which is perfectly normal. They often times explain how the web site conversion is going to work and how in the long term view of things benefit your web site as you start to see the growth and the generation of visitors to your web site. As well as returning visitors to your web site.

They encourage the probability of introducing new products or information on your web site for those returning visitors as well as the generated traffic that has never been to your web site. Either way both are an investment. Web site conversion simplifies all the different areas you might not be familiar with starting out with a new web site and these companies can provide you with information or perhaps even help you on your web site conversion and all that pertains to getting that task accomplished.

However, for some people they are content with the generation of traffic they are already receiving through the use of Internet advertisements, and banners, but the web site conversion isn’t really about this, its more on the selling power of your web site and the returning customers that will come back to your web site.

More web sites are doing the web site conversion with the help of different companies simply because of the turn out they see on other web sites. These web sites and affiliates know the program and how it operates, if you are unsure do a bit of research as well as talk to those who know about web site conversion.

Why an Advertising Agency needs to know Social Media

Why an Advertising Agency needs to know Social Media

It’s not too late to teach an old dog new tricks. There are plenty of advertising agencies that still don’t get social media or don’t want to get it. It’s the Fear Factor – fear of the unknown, fear of change, fear of losing their client’s business, etc. Whatever the fear – they better overcome it fast.

Advertising Agencies

According to a recent TNS Media survey that asked more than 60 marketers in North America, France and the U.K. how their advertising agencies were navigating in the world of social media, the overwhelming response was, “Agencies don’t get it.”

Clients are putting more and more emphasis on social media but their agencies are not helping them. Clients complained that their agencies typically treat social channels like traditional media. In other words, their ideas are not backed up by practical skills in the area.

“I think traditional ad agencies have very little contribution to make,” Bryan Simkins, a marketing specialist at FedEx, told TNS. “They are mostly driven by their compensation models which are made for closed media. Those models don’t apply in open media.”

Jim Nail, chief marketing officer at TNS who conducted the survey, said: “You get the sense that agencies talk a good game. They put up a good presentation about what social media is, but when you get to implementing campaigns, the day-to-day management skills are not meeting the marketers’ expectations.”
The future of advertising is two-way, not one-way like so many traditional advertisers are used to. This will haunt ad agencies as more clients make social media a top priority – and put a lot of them out of business.

On The Right Track

All is not lost. Here are a few ways a traditional advertising agency can change their thinking fast:

Nearly 50 percent of the marketers who were polled in the TNS survey said social media efforts need to be handled at an executive level with “significant” resources.
An agency needs to do more than learn the etiquette of social media. It needs to make sure that everything from comments to blog posts to videos not only adds value, but does so with the kind of cleverness and creativity that will make it stand out.

Adapt new business models. Ad agencies are poorly structured to help client’s leverage opportunities with communities of shared interests. If they apply old models they can do more harm than good.
Stop being everything to everybody. You won’t appeal to everybody in your social media efforts so define your niche market and focus on that.

If your product or service is good – social media is great. If your product or service is bad, nothing is going to help – not even social media.

Finally, use social media to promote your agency. Social media forces your agency to do business the way it should have been done before social. It is about your audience, not about your agency. It forces you to lead with your core benefits and values. The minute you start to “sell your agency” you will lose your audience.

Carolyn Holliday, e-marketing manager at Fila USA, sums it up like this: “I really think that ad agencies need to focus heavily on how they can build excitement within the live space of the Internet. Outside of just placing ads, they need to start dialogues with existing and potential customers.”

All You Need to Know About Internet Marketing

All You Need to Know About Internet Marketing

Every endeavor needs a long time strategy in order to become successful. Internet, as you know, internet has limitless opportunities. But tapping these resources and prospects require proper understanding, planning and execution. Internet marketing has picked up during the last few years and is in the process of overtaking all other marketing fields of the world combined.

You start an Internet business with some overall marketing objectives. But you have to learn how to conduct all aspects of Internet based promotions, including improving brand consciousness, slotting your product at the apt space, generating online traffic flow and run banner promotions. I would like to present two highly productive Internet marketing strategies in the succeeding paragraphs.

• Target men and women differently. The shopping habits, likes, dislikes etc of men and women differ vastly. Gender stereotypes definitely apply as far as shopping is concerned. Try to learn the differences in the way men and women browse the Internet and position your product or services accordingly.

• Personalized Online Marketing. Conventional shopping has its own difficulties. These include unnecessary commuting, rummaging through goods to find the item you require, getting bamboozled by the sweet talk of the salesman etc. Online shops help the customer to buy what he or she requires without leaving the household comforts. Internet marketing appeals to most customers due to its one to one personal approach.

Running a specific advertisement program over the Internet with the help of e-mails, pop-up advertisements etc are highly rewarding online marketing tactics. You can even optimize your website’s relation with the popular search engines by way of search engine optimization. Usually a web browser enters a key word and the search engine picks up related sites and displays them. Your site would come in the first result page if it were properly keyed in as per the requirements of the search engine. Your sales would invariably rise as traffic increases.

Conventional advertisements appeal to a certain demographic, cultural, age and gender group. Internet marketing is no different either. But there are some additional tools like blogs and twitter that helps the advertiser to fathom how his product is being accepted by the masses. There are different facets of Internet marketing, which include e-commerce, publishing, and creating leads. Affiliate marketing is commercially rewarding even for part time professionals.

Everything Your Need to Know About Test Marketing and Social Media Optimization

Everything Your Need to Know About Test Marketing and Social Media Optimization

What on earth is test marketing and social media optimization?

Social media or social media optimization is the utilization of the information which is gathered from social communities for marketing purposes.

Social media optimization uses different tools which include RSS feeds/blogging, blogs, twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, MySpace etc. the idea is the incorporation of a third-party application to such social media websites. You must have heard of search engine optimization when people go in for keyword searches for particular keywords. In the same way, expert social media optimization is going to drive traffic present on social bookmarking communities and sites to your particular website, instead of having them come to your website through a search engine search.

Websites pertaining to the social media have expanded exponentially during the past couple of years. Every single website is using different methods of networking, and each website has different traffic audiences visiting them. They might have diverse interests or similar interests. That is the reason why many business groups are looking at this new idea of using social media optimization, to get positive and profitable results. This can be seen in the case of Twitter.

Twitter has begun to grow more popular, because it uses a new and innovative way of blogging called micro-blogging. The idea is to expand this form of social networking through this interesting social media form. You are going to micro-blog through twitters, post links, pictures, and other information upon your blog. You are going to invite other people to comment upon your services and products. This immediate response can be a good way to get up-to-date information really quickly.

And just why is this so important, you might ask.

An immediate product feedback is going to be very important, especially when you are branding a new company. This is going to be the basis of your future business reputation and marketing strategies. Up-to-date feedback can be considered to be an important an integral part of creating a reputation online. That is the reason why, using social media optimization and social book marketing is considered to be one of the most important strategies in the testing of a business reputation. This is naturally very important for individuals or business who want to create a presence online, yet cannot pay for focus groups and market surveys.

Taking the use of a social community to get immediate feedback, tips and more links is one of the ways to make your product more acceptable to the public. This naturally means increased profits in the future.

An individual or a company can use different Twitter services like Tweepbeep and even Tweetscan, where they can find out how many times their product has been mentioned in Tweets. This can give them an approximate estimate on how to go about their marketing strategy, as well as give them proper feedback, to which they can respond appropriately on Twitter.

This is also good opportunity for the CEO of a company to get in touch with his clients, so that he knows exactly what they feel about his services and products.

This example can be seen very clearly in the case of Kmart. If Kmart had gone on to such social media websites, they would not have been the joke they are today, with their market standing not very creditable. That is the reason why, a number of farseeing companies are keeping a careful E upon the needs and wants of the consumer. You would want to do the same if you want to be really successful.
